A Podiatrist's Barefoot Running Blog (Part 4)

Another quick update from Dr. Randy Beckman and his experience running in the Vibram Five Fingers:

Went running this weekend in the Hill country of Texas. Got in 2 pretty good runs and wore the Five Fingers for 1 mile each of the runs. No real foot/leg problems yet, except for Saturday morning early, when running in the park, I saw 1 armadillo, 6 deer, and one skunk!! Yes, I got sprayed by the skunk! After washing myself 3 times, and my clothes 2 times, I finally got the smell out. I also used a local concoction of peroxide, baking soda, and Dawn on my shoes. Will keep on running.

Beckman out.

You can learn more about Dr. Beckman at www.TxFootDoctor.com. I thank him for continuing to share his experiences and look forward to more.

  1. I'm very interested in how this is going. After using Vibrams for about 6 months (and running up to 14 miles at a time), I started to develop a neuroma between by 2nd and 3rd toes on my right foot. They would go numb sometimes during a run, but I didn't think much of it. Now they're numb 50% of the time, even when not running. My podiatrist has told me to stop using the vibrams, but I've gotten so many other benefits from them. Please keep the information coming!

  2. I'm scheduled to see you on Friday, Dr. Beckman . . . hope the stink has worn off by then!

Matt Z., would your foot feel better, I wonder if you went barefoot, or wore something like 4mm huaraches instead?

  3. J, thanks. I'm trying to restart my training doing all barefoot running. I can still feel my nerve being excited when I run, but not on the softer surfaces. Unfortunately, I don't have many nice areas of softer surfaces around. The ones I do have geese and dog feces all over the area; not a dog lover myself.
